Tracks 3 - 8 are interviews for the 'Battle of St Ann's' project: the interviews are with Mrs Worthington; the interview is recorded in her home. Mrs Worthington is a long term resident of the St Ann's area; a study by local social commentators has categorised the houses as 'slum dwellings' and where many residents are living in 'poverty'. The tracks frequently run into each other.
Track 3: The discussion starts with outlining the problem of returning to the house following a period in hospital due to illness, the discussion then moves onto the local doctors, then to the difficulty of coping with the steps in the area due to her arthritis. The discussion then covers how long she has lived in the house and that she wants to leave the house/area. 3.33 mins
Track 4: A discussion of difficulties when working because of her illness and then moves onto the poor conditions in the house. 4.38 mins.
Track 5: A discussion of the poor condition of the area, then moves on to the difficulty of physically getting around due to her arthritis and that she is in fear of leaving the house particularly after dark. The interviews are with Bil Sel? and in later interviews with Ken Coates, the interview location is not identified, the interviews are regarding the study/survey undertaken by the social study group into 'slum dwellings' and 'poverty' in the St Ann's area: for more information see Sub Series level. The tracks frequently run into each other.
Track 9: A discussion of the social study class, then regarding the period at the start of the study project 4 or 5 years ago and that he already knew Ken (Coates). Then a discussion regarding the class studying the social structure of Britain; reading Able, Smith & Townsend's book 'The Poor and the Poorest'. Then moving onto discussing how the group decided to make a study in Nottingham based on the same model as in the book and that St Ann’s was selected due to its proximity to their work base. Track 10: A discussion about how the study group collected data on mobility, turnover and the demographics of the area, collected census type information and looked into the businesses. They conducted in depth questionnaires with 1 in 6 households. Then the discussion moves on to the first report showing that 36% of the population of St Ann’s were living in poverty.
