DescriptionTracks 1 - 10: The interviews are with Mrs Connell and Mrs Yellop who are also featured on the previous recording MS 4000/6/1/66/15; the interview is recorded in Mrs Yellop's home. Mrs Connell, is most likely in her late 20s or early 30s, she is from St Ann’s but her family (husband and children) have emigrated to Australia; she has returned for a short period to look after her convalescing mother. Mrs Yellop is aged 27 and her family (husband and children) have been residents of St Ann’s for a relatively short time they moved to St Ann's because they could not afford to live anywhere else and it would have been a 5 year wait for a council house. A study by local social commentators about the St Ann’s area has categorised the houses as 'slum dwellings' and where many residents are living in 'poverty'. The tracks frequently run into each other.
Track 1: A discussion about cleaning the houses everyday. A new discussion about Mrs Connell's life in Australia. A new discussion regarding her view that society has 'forgotten the workers' and it is 'politicians that dictate how the lower class should live'; she sees no point in talking to the council and other authorities etc and that the community is very discouraged, the discussion continues on the following track. 3.11 mins.
Track 2: The discussion continues regarding the tenants discouragement and how she feels it is pointless to defer to established authorities expresses the 'hopelessness' of the situation. 3.31 mins.
Track 3: The discussion continues regarding the residents 'downheartedness' etc. The discussion moves to Mrs Connell's concerns that her mother will be unable to afford the new higher rents for the new houses, this flows into a discussion about families. A new discussion about SATRA (Residents Association). A new discussion that the Yellops purchased the house because there would have been a 5 year wait for a council house and this was the only house that they could afford, the discussion continues on the following track. 3.21 mins.
Track 4: The discussion continues regarding decorating and renovating the houses. A discussion regarding her impressions of the area before she moved there; the stigma of being a resident of St Ann’s and how the 'St Ann’s Road Mob try to prove people wrong'. The discussion continues that she feels this a depressing place to live and how it is difficult too take prams down steps. 3.56 mins.
Track 5: A new discussion how they are 'all taxpayers' and they should be heard, however they don't believe they can influence the council to take action. Mrs Yellop had hoped to be relocated in April but no one from the council has spoken to them. The discussion continues regarding their poor opinion of the new houses. 2.34 mins.
Track 6: A new discussion regarding tackling the council: of the need for the residents to be told how/helped to get to 'the people in charge' because they feel that speaking to the people on the desk will not get them anywhere, this flows into a discussion of the need to organise the residents as a group to tackle the council. The discussion returns to their opinion that the new housing estate being built will turn into new slums and that there is a cycle that the council are not/will not maintain the area/houses which in turn leads to the residents thinking 'why should I bother?'. 3.21 mins.
Track 7: The discussion returns to her not knowing when or where she is going to be relocated. The discussion moves on to children playing in her street: 'hell raising' and 'abusive' youths. 3.00 mins.
Track 8: The discussion continues about children/youths, this flows into a discussion that there are few facilities, that she won't let her children play out, concerns about peer pressure and poor upbringing, the discussion continues on the following track. 4.15 mins.
Track 9: The discussion continues about children/youths; about the school her children attend and how in her opinion her children are different. A new discussion regarding how when they first moved to the area her husband told her that 'it was a rough area and to be careful who she became friends with'. 3.07 mins.
Track 10: A discussion of prostitution in the area: the impact this has on her and that some of her neighbours are prostitutes. A new discussion about dogs, the recording speeds up until it becomes inaudible. 2.55 mins.
