DescriptionRecording of interviews for the 'Battle of St Ann's' project:
Tracks 1 - 2: the interviews are with Mrs Bob Lawson; the interview is recorded in her home. Mrs Lawson is a long term resident of the St Ann's area; a study by local social commentators has categorised the houses as 'slum dwellings' and where many residents are living in 'poverty'. Interviews follow on from MS 4000/6/1/66/5. The tracks frequently run into each other.
Track 1: A discussion of the problem of noise from the pork farm factory: recounting that she had phoned the police, spoken to MPs and arranged a petition; she explains that she came up against a lot of apathy and it was disheartening that nothing was done. 3.29 mins.
Track 2: A discussion continuing from the previous track of the involvement of her MP and how when appealing directly the factory workers don't take any notice. A new discussion of what she feels has happened to the church and that few people now attend regularly. 2.11 mins.

Tracks 3 - 4: The interviews are with Bill Silbern; the location of the interview is not identified. This recording possibly relates to MS 4000/6/1/66/ 1 - 1D. Bill Silbern is being interviewed as a social commentator/academic. The tracks frequently run into each other.
Track 3: A discussion regarding addressing the Fabian Society; of how there is a perception 'that it is the people who live in poverty that are responsible for the conditions in which they live' and that there is a need to demonstrate that this is not the case 'as this is an argument that immobilises people: it allows them no voice, makes them powerless and allows everyone else to turn away' etc. 3.32 mins.
Track 4: Discussions regarding the maintenance of stereotypes and generalised statements; that this can be combatted by meeting such individuals otherwise it is easy to maintain such prejudices. 2.00 mins.

Tracks 5 - 6: The interviews are with Mrs Wilson; the interview is recorded in her home, the interview continues on recording MS 4000/6/1/66/7 - 9. Mrs Wilson is a long term resident of the St Ann's area. The tracks frequently run into each other.
Track 5: A discussion regarding Mrs Wilson's personal history: about her family, that she has lived at the house for 38 years, that her husband was a miner and then a builder. This is followed by more discussion of her early years and that she worked in a tobacco factory. 3.03 mins.
Track 6: Discussions regarding the area of Cinder Hill where Mrs Wilson had lived: how the area had changed, details about her Farther and Grandfarther who were colliers. The discussion moves onto that she was a 2nd wife and she 'took on' 3 children. Then more general discussion about the houses, family, work and husband. 2.20 mins.

Total: 16.37 mins.
