This is a recording of a broadcast made by Charles Parker on BBC Radio 3 in 1971, in which he stresses the importance of the oral tradition to the teaching of English and to the future of the English language. The role of the tape recorder as a tool for promoting and celebrating vernacular speech is identified.
Track 1 includes a brief description of Parker's personal background. Track 2 refers to railwaymen in Stockport (possibly interviewed for the making of the radio ballad ' John Axon'). Parker describes his approach to recording interviewees in Track 2 and considers the tape recorder as a a tool for creative activity in track 3. He also describes the project 'The Long March of Everyman' in Track 3.
