Interview with unidentified man. He discusses government reforms that have widened access to university education for people from different social backgrounds, his view of the social and political reasons for the insurgency which he thinks are partly related to peoples of lower castes feelings of frustration. He talks about the survival of the caste system in the country, people of 'low castes' being discriminated against when seeking work, the atmosphere in the period leading up to the disturbances, and the political changes he noticed on his return to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) after living abroad. He considers the grievances of the insurgents, the effects of the insurgency on left wing political parties in the country, particularly within the SLFP (Sri Lanka Freedom Party), and gives a class interpretation of the SLFP and the party's ideology, and goes on to consider the reaction of the UNP (United National Party) to the insurgency and the disillusionment of some members of left wing parties towards the policies of these parties (tracks 2-11).
