Mr Gayle speaks about fighting for Britain in the Second World War as ground crew in the air force. He talks about the war effort in Jamaica. The couple talk about the image they had of Britain as 'the mother country' growing up in Jamaica, and how this impression was fostered in Jamaica, with reference to Empire Day. The couple talk about their arrivals in Britain and their initial impressions of the country and landscape. Mr Gayle arrived in Britain before his wife, and he talks about the accommodation that there was for African Caribbean immigrants at that time. Mr Gayle talks about the jobs he had when he came to Britain, and about attending a technical college in Handsworth, Birmingham.
