Charles Parker interviews Doctor Rod Griffiths, who teaches anatomy at the University of Birmingham and is a general practitioner in Balsall Heath. Griffiths is also Chairman of Central Birmingham Community Health Council and Vice Chairman of the National Association of Community Health Councils. He is a member of the Socialist Medical Association (Tracks 1 & 16 - 17).

Griffiths discusses both specific Birmingham hospitals and wider medical and health issues.

The proposed transfer of services from Birmingham Accident Hospital to Selly Oak is considered, as are similar plans to move maternity services from Sorrento Hospital to Birmingham Maternity Hospital (Tracks 1 & 13). Difficulties in accessing these sites by public transport are discussed, and also problems in obtaining altered bus routes (Track 3).

Inequalities in the distribution of NHS services are considered and the introduction of the Resource Allocation Working Party (RAWP) is noted. The adverse effect of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Central Birmingham Health Disrict's budget is described, with the hospital absorbing most of the budget and treating relatively few patients from the District (Tracks 4 - 5).

Tracks 6 - 7 consider a clash within the Health Service between political and professional ethics. Doctor Griffiths outlines how model for smaller units of control within the NHS (Track 8). Parker and Griffiths debate the nature of socialism within a health service (Tracks 10 - 11).
