DescriptionTracks 1 - 21

Tracks 1 - 7 and 16 - 21 are a continuation of Charles Parker's interview with Doctor Rod Griffiths. Tracks 8 - 15 contain a broadcast on private health care, which Parker and Griffiths periodically comment on.

Tracks 1 - 4 concern a discussion about bureaucracy in the NHS and the need for a truly learning service rather than one that relies only on information systems. The benefits of the General Practitioner system in the UK is considered, and Doctor Tudor Hart's contrast between health workers and social workers is noted (Track 4). Reference is made to the Socialist Medical Association (SMA) (Track 5) and to the Royal College of General Practitioners (Track 7).

Doctor Griffiths provides a history of social spending in Britain and discusses community health councils (CHC) (Track 16). The consumer movement is also considered, and comments of the history of the Citizens Advice Movement are recorded (Track 17). Local control of and bureaucracy within the NHS is discussed and comments recorded about the role that Sir David Perris plays within the West Midlands health system (Track 18). Griffith's view of his own position within the NHS is also given (Tracks 18 - 19). The perceived impact of television and newspapers on society is noted (Tracks 19 - 20).

Griffiths identifies perceived inconsistencies in socialist thinking about health services and he cites London's Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital for women and the Queen Victoria Nursing Institute in Wolverhampton (Track 21). He also comments on the women's liberation movement's approach to 'Asian' culture.

Tracks 8 - 9 record a broadcast about private health care in the Midlands. BUPA hospitals are referred to and personnel from the Nuffield Nursing Homes Trust are interviewed. Perceived benefits for staff working in the private sector are discussed and the stats and background of private patients is considered.
