DescriptionTracks 1 - 20

These tracks record interviews in Glyncorrwg, South Wales, made by Charles Parker on his return to the village (see MS 4000/6/1/81/14 for previous interviews). Track 8 is silent and Track 20 records background noise.

Doctor Julian Tudor Hart comments on political attitudes towards the NHS and medical services. He also describes the provision of Glyncorrwg's health centre (the first in Wales) and provides an image of the Afan Valley and surrounding areas of South Wales.

A range of issues are considered, some of which are listed here.
Track 1 records a discussion of John Robson's recent publication (possibly entitled 'State Capitalism and Medicine' or similar).
Track 2 is a debate between Parker and a Welsh person who is reluctant to be interviews, but who takes issue with his perception that confrontation with the police and local people in 1926 has been over promoted, to the exclusion of the issues preceding that event. A discussion about the role of police occurs.
Tudor Hart considers the conflict between reformism and revolution ad discusses collaborationists with capitalists, with reference to medical services (Tracks 3 - 5).
He also comments on the 1974 reorganisation of the NHS (Track 7). Track 9 records Mary Hart and an unidentified speaker discussing education (possibly of medical staff).

Tracks 5 & 10 - 11 refer to production matters. Practical issues raised by the show's commissioner (NUPE) that industrial sector unions (especially the Transport and General and AEUW) be shown the importance of the public services are discussed. Tudor Hart insists that the role of engineering be recognised and discusses the industrialisation of medicine (Track 11).

There is a discussion of morbidity rates amongst doctors, and an observation on the low expectation of life in the area (Track 12). Reference is made to a disused rail tunnel between the Afan and Rhonda valleys and land reclamation projects are noted. Housing policy in the district is criticised and Parker comments favourably on Birmingham's recent adoption of urban renewal programmes (Tracks 13 - 14). Vandalism and the dangers of guns in society are discussed (Track 15).

Tracks 16 and 18 record discussions of medical conditions, miscarriages being considered in Track 16. The design and construction of medical premises is discussed (Track 17) and the background to the provision of Glyncoowg Health Centre is given (Track 19). This includes a note about ambulance provision in the area over a period of time.
