This records Charles Parker's interview with Valerie Little, an administrator with Birmingham Area Health Authority. Descriptions are given of Birmingham hospitals and background to their current conditions. Views are expressed about political attitudes to the NHS.

Tracks 1 - 2 & 19 provide details of the interviewee. Representation in the health service is considered and reference is made to NHS reorganisation and the former Hospital Management Committees (Track 3). The impact of the Resource Allocation Working Party (RAWP) on Birmingham and the West Midlands is discussed, and an explanation of the assessment criteria used is given, together with a criticism of the way that it is interpreted by West Midlands Regional Health Authority (Tracks 3 - 7).

Hospitals referred to include the Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital and Sorrento Maternity Hospital. (Track 8). A suspicion is expressed of racism in the provision of maternity services within Birmingham (Track 8). The concept of district general hospitals (DGH) is considered, and the pattern of such provision in Birmingham is described (Track 10). Access to hospitals and lack of effective planning between health and transport authorities (in this case West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive) is discussed. (Tracks 11 - 12). The abandoned 'grand plans' for expanded specialist hospital services at the Selly Oak and Queen Elizabeth sites are described ad the partial implementation of Birmingham Regional Hospital Board's hospital plan of 1962 is described (Tracks 13 - 15). The condition of Rubery Hill Hospital is noted (Tracks 17 -18).

Primary health care, community care and psychiatric and geriatric services are considered (Tracks 16 - 20).
