This recording is a continuation of the meeting at the Imperial Hotel called by NUPE to oppose cuts in health services (see MS 4000/6/81/32). Contributors offer views about the effect of public expenditure cuts.
Hospitals discussed include East Birmingham (Track 1), Romsley Hall {tracks 6 -7 & 15), Sorrento and Birmimghma Accident (Track 10). Hounslow Hospital is referred to (Track 2).
As well as members of individual trades unions, Birmingham Trades Council is represented at the meeting (Tracks 6 -7). Betty Wilson speaks for East Birmingham Coummunity Health Council (Track 5) and Rod Griffiths gives a perspective for Central Birmingham CHC (Tracks 8 - 10 & 17). Whilst speaking in a private capacity, Margaret Stanton also provides a CHC perspective, as well as explaining the role of these bodies and raising issues concerning capital and revenue funding in the health service (Tracks 13 & 18).
The remit and composition of the West Midlands Steering Regional Steering Committee (concerned with public spending cuts) are considered (Track 16) The meeting calls for a committee specifically to tackle threats in Birmingham's health services. A debate occurs between trade union representatives and those from community health councils as to whether the campaign should focus only on opposing cuts or take a wider view about improving the NHS. (Tracks 16 - 19).
After much consideration, the meeting agrees to form a committee to oppose hospital closures and reductions in services (Track 19).
