DescriptionTracks 1 - 15

Tracks 1 - 12 are a continuation of an interview with Chris Adamson (NUPE Birmingham representative) by Banner, whilst Tracks 13 - 15 are recordings with Margaret Stanton of South Birmingham Community Health Council (CHC). This interview is continued on MS 4000/6/1/81/6/D.

Charles Parker, Chris Rogers and Dave Rogers discuss control of the NHS with Chris Adamson. Observations of the calibre of members of area health authorities are made (Track 3) and also of community health councils (Track 6). The nature of technocrats in the NHS is considered, and also the perceived dominance of the health service by the medical profession (Tracks 4 - 5). The need for a 'united front' of trade unions within the NHS is discussed and reference is made to COHSE (the Confederation of Health Service Employees) (Tracks 11 - 12).

During the discussion about area health authorities, Adamson observes that surreptitious tape recording of the proceedings of Birmingham Health Authority would be possible (Track 2).

Margaret Stanton provides an insight to the operations of and pressures on South Birmingham CHC. The composition of CHCs is considered (Track 13) and the pressures on local government councillors is described. Councillor Theresa Stewart is identified as a considerable asset for the CHC (Track 14). The pressures on the health service of an increasingly aged population are discussed and the example of problems at John Connolly Hospital is given (Tracks 14 - 15).
