This is a compilation of snippets of interviews, conducted by Charles Parker and an unidentified woman with young people, older residents of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and trades unionists, teachers and other professionals concerned with addressing issues raised by youth unemployment.

The fragmented nature of this tape has resulted in a very patchy listening resource. However, certain themes have been identified:

Track 2 includes a discussion of what the trades union response to youth unemployment should be. The marginalisation of unemployed people within society is considered.

Tracks 3 -4 look at the role of teaching and increasing pressures on teachers because of the worsening economic situation. The role of careers teachers is discussed (Track 4). Track 10 includes a call for more effective links between schools and communities to be developed.

Tracks 5 - 6 look at young people's experience of the education system and of trying to gain employment. Track 7 considers discipline and authority within schools and how children are controlled at school.

Track 8 contains a reference to young people's lack of knowledge about the depression of the 1920s & 1930s.

Track 9 features a discussion of appropriate intervew attire and a query as to whether the American experience of youth alienation will enter British society. There is also a discussion of employment opportunities for young black people in different parts of Nottingham. Tracks 11 - 12 consider young black peoples attitude to employment prospects compared to their parents.

Track 11 contains a reference to Stanton Ironworks and Track 12 considers the Hyson Green district of Nottingham.

Track 13 features a discussion of adolescence.

Tracks 15 - 20 consider the impact of new technology on employment. Reference is made to the mining industry and tookmaking trades (Tracks 15 & 18 -19 and Track 18 respectively. A workers' representative from Lucas Aerospace discusses how workers there have harnessed new technology to assist the workforce, sometimes agaisnt the wishes of management (Tracks 18 & 20).

The Youth Opportunities Programme (YOP) is mentioned (Track 18) and the Puritan work ethic is discused (Tracks 16 - 17 & 19). A Jewish woman talks about the dangers of fascism and calls for young people not to join the National Front (Track 17).
