DescriptionTracks 1 - 22 (Tracks 13 & 18 are silent)

This is a compilation of snippets of interviews for two programmes - 'You've got NOWT' (Track 1 - 19) and 'No Time to Be Young' (Tracks 20 - 22). The fragmented nature of this tape has resulted in a patchy listening resource. However, certain themes have been identified:

Track 1 features Charles Parker introducing 'You've got NOWT' as the first of five for Radio Nottingham prepared by the Nottingham Out of Work Teenagers project on the theme of youth unemployment.

Track 2 records a miner's experiences of seeking work at a colliery, after a period of unemployment (possibly in the 1930s). Tracks 2 - 3 concern a young person's experiences of being unemployed. Patterns of employment and underemployment in Nottingham are considered in Track 3, as are recruitment and retention practices by employers such as Boots, Players and Raleigh.

Track 6 records an elderly lady's reminiscences of her youth. A lady talks about lacemaking on Track 7. Tracks 6 - 9 feature a miner and Bentick Colliery is discussed.

Track 9 considers young people's attitudes to trades unions, some of which are negative. Reference is made to the 1978 / 1979 public sector strikes known as the 'winter of discontent'.

A trades unionist speaks of the need for and role of unions on Track 10. Tracks 10 - 12 record war-time experiences, including the call-up of soldiers (Track 10), bomb raids on Nottingham and women war workers (Track 11). Discipline and hierarchy in the army is contrasted with the miners' relative equality within collieries and the admiration felt be conscripted miners during the war years for Soviet workers is describes (Track 11).

Young people discuss employment, unemployment and careers advice in Tracks 14 - 17.

Charles Parker announces 'No Time to Be Young' as the second programme of the series on Track 20 and this is followed by comments about the education system. TRacks 21 - 22 record record the young peoples experiences of discrimination (including racial discrimination) whilst seeking employment and also whilst employed.
