This recording was made from Banner Theatre Archive tapes nos 80, 81 and 82. George Thomson discusses the reasons for the creation of the Welfare State after the Second World War in the context of the political situation in the country at that time, the policies of the Communist party, and the 1945 Labour election victory. He goes on to discuss his views about the Labour party and the part he believes its leaders played in collaboration with the British ruling classes. He then discusses changes in manufacturing, the capitalist economy and the ongoing oil crisis, government expenditure and priorities, and bureaucracy in the National Health Service |
