This recording was made from Banner Theatre Archive tape 764. George Thomson discusses Communism, with particular reference to the systems in the Soviet Union and China. He talks about Soviet successes, and the Cultural Revolution in China, criticism of Mao and the Gang of Four and discusses the extent to which the Communist Party has the support of the people in China and Poland. He goes on to talk about the Communist struggle in Britain, the successes of the British Communist Party in the 1930s in mobilising the workers against unemployment and fascism, the influence of pacifism, and the frustrations felt by young black people in the 1980s. He gives his opinion about recent events, including the Pope's visit to Britain and the Falklands conflict, the tensions within the Labour party, and the need for people to unite to struggle against injustice |
