Elizabeth describes her anger at being punished for receiving bad marks by being excluded from the school's music exam, adding that her friend Edith had been forbidden from going on the school's next theatre trip. Elizabeth notes that Miss Trinks had told her that whenever Elizabeth and Edith got together the girls 'were always up to mischief'.
