TitleLetter from Mary Jane Taylor to Margaret and Elizabeth Taylor
LevelItem
Date11 October 1872
DescriptionThis letter provides an insight into the Taylor family's Quaker principles. Mary Taylor refers to a letter which Elizabeth Taylor had written home asking for permission to go to the theatre. Mary Taylor writes:

Elsie has taken chiefly to begging letters but to her last request we give a very decided and unwavering negative! If everyone in the house goes to the Theatre but you, you may not. Papa said - "why they will be asking to give up their teetotalism next".'

Mary Taylor continues her letter remarking on the welfare and recent activities of relatives and family friends, noting that the girls' brother Howard (John Howard, born 1861) seemed 'happy and well' at Ackworth School. She also sends instructions for the girls' school photographs, remarks on the weather and refers to her forthcoming activities.

This letter relates to a letter sent by Elizabeth Taylor to her father and mother asking for permission to go on a school trip to the theatre in September 1872.
