TitleLetter from Mary Jane Taylor and Elizabeth Pettifer Lucas Cash to Elizabeth Taylor
LevelItem
Date30 August 1873
DescriptionThe first half of this letter was written by Elizabeth Taylor's mother Mary Jane Taylor. The second half of the letter features a copy which Mary Taylor made of a letter written to Elizabeth and Margaret by their grandmother Elizabeth Pettifer Lucas Cash. The letters refer to Margaret Taylor's arrival home from school in Germany and Elizabeth's return to school in Saxe-Meiningen after her holidays at home in Peckham Rye. Margaret Taylor returned home from Germany at the end of August 1873 to help her pregnant mother who gave birth to the girls' younger brother John Augustine in November 1873.

In her letter Mary Taylor remarks on Elizabeth's return journey to school in Saxe-Meiningen. She also includes comments about different members of the Taylor family and Elizabeth's dog Twist who she writes was wandering about the house missing Elizabeth. Mary Taylor also reminds Elizabeth about the comfort of prayer, remarking on a prayer which her father had delivered at family worship the previous evening.

The letter from Elizabeth's grandmother refers to Margaret Taylor's return home from school in Saxe-Meiningen, remarking that she was returning 'to fill a very important station as the oldest of a large household'. She also comments on Elizabeth's return to school in Germany without her sister and reminds Elizabeth to turn to God and trust in her religious faith for guidance.
