| Title | Letter from Elizabeth Taylor to John, Mary Jane and Janet Taylor |
| Level | Item |
| Date | [n.d. 1876] |
| Description | This letter was written by Elizabeth Taylor towards the end of her visit with her elder sister Margaret (Pearlie) to her uncle Joseph Taylor and his family. Elizabeth thanks her parents for their letters and describes her activities in Darlington including family visits, social calls and numerous trips to the dentist following the extraction of one of her teeth earlier in her stay.
Elizabeth writes that she and Margaret had gone to lunch at the home of the Quaker industrialist Sir Arthur Pease (1866-1972). Pease was associated with numerous industrial and financial concerns and later involved with government committees related to industry. Elizabeth remarks on her admiration for Sir Arthur, whose family were related to Thomas Pease (died 1884), the father of Edward Reynolds Pease with whom Elizabeth later became associated through the Portfolio Society.
Elizabeth describes a visit to a spa, a tour of numerous iron works and an enjoyable carriage ride. She adds that news of her bravery at the dentist had become local knowledge and describes going in full evening dress to an Essay Meeting. |
