| Description | In this letter, written on Good Friday 1867, Mary Taylor remarks on a planned excursion to Malvern with some relatives. She also comments on a game of croquet and describes a woodland walk, remarking on the Brecon Beacons and the River Severn. Mary Taylor also comments on a visit by Elizabeth's cousins Gertrude (Gertie) and Sonia. Reflecting the difference in attitudes to race during the late nineteenth century, Mary Taylor remarks that the girls had sung an amusing song about Chinese people. The letter also includes many comments about the weather which caused the party to cancel their trip to Malvern. Mary Taylor also writes about her plans to decorate the nursery at home in Peckham Rye. An additional passage, possibly written by the girls' mother or father, is featured at the end of the letter which provides an account of a rabbit that the Taylor family had found in the garden and their activities after the weekend. |
