TitleLetter from Frank Deeley to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury and a reply from the Cadbury family
LevelItem
Date25 January 1926 - 26 January 2009
DescriptionFrank Deeley from Washworth Heath wrote to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury thanking her for her address which he remarks 'went right to my heart'. Deeley writes that he had once been involved in the Birmingham Slum Mission and had worked as a Sunday School Teacher and Wesleyan Local Preacher as well as serving as a missionary during the First World War. However, Deeley writes that he had lately 'lost the reality of it all' and 'lost touch with the Divine' owing to financial difficulties.

Deeley writes that after hearing Taylor Cadbury's address he 'was almost persuaded to give myself to God again as a prodigal'. Deeley describes his recent life to Taylor Cadbury, writing that he had served as a Private in the First World War and returned home to a poor job and continual illness. He provides a detailed account of his financial problems which had been partially relieved by borrowing money from Barclays Bank. He writes about his three sons and asks Taylor Cadbury if she would let him know of anyone who could help him provide clothing for them.

Deeley concludes his letter on a positive note, remarking that he hoped yet to become involved in philanthropic work in the slums.

Owing to Taylor Cadbury's operation her children sent replies to a number of the people who wrote to her following her broadcast. A copy of the reply sent to Frank Deeley is enclosed with his letter.
