DescriptionThis document includes a letter written to Taylor Cadbury by George Seaver and a typescript of some memoirs of Dr. Albert Schweitzer which she wrote in response to this letter. George Seaver wrote to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury on 26th October 1944 asking her if she would be able to provide him with some reminiscences about Dr. Albert Schweitzer for a biography which he was writing based on the time she had spent with the Schweitzers when they had visited her in Northfield.

Taylor Cadbury's memoirs of the Schweitzers are attached to George Seaver's letter. She recalls Dr. Albert Schweitzer's 'quiet sincere Christian outlook on life' and refers to entries in her journal relating to their visit to England. Taylor Cadbury also provides a description of Helene Schweitzer and an account of the couples' activities whilst staying with her in Northfield.

Albert and Helene Schweitzer wrote to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury in 1935 following a visit to the Manor House.

AdminHistoryDr. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) was a famous German medical doctor, missionary to Africa and theological historian. As well as the hospital work which he undertook with his wife Helene (nee Bresslau), in 1915 Schweitzer devised the ethical philosophy of 'Reverence for Life', a theory of unity and inter-dependence in life which influenced the development of later welfare movements. He was awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his work. Helene Schweitzer shared many of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's interests in social reform for women and children. The Schweitzer's visited Taylor Cadbury at her home, the Manor House in Northfield in 1928 and again in 1935.
