TitleAddress by Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury about her experiences representing the Liberal Party at the 1923 General Election
LevelItem
Date02 January 1924
DescriptionThis untitled address was delivered by Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury to a meeting held by supporters of the Liberal Party. Taylor Cadbury suggests that the purpose of the meeting was to celebrate the Party's fight 'for Freedom, Reform, Industrial Prosperity, and International Peace'. She states that following the election 'I am convinced that a re-awakened, vigorous, competent Liberal Party is the main hope for the country in the future.'

Taylor Cadbury's address considers the reasons why the Liberal Party failed at the 1923 election, referring to the decisions of local manufacturers influenced by Conservative Party policies on Protected Tariffs. Commenting on the national political situation and the split over Home Rule in 1885, Taylor Cadbury remarks 'what untold misery and hatred, what destruction and desolation, would have been averted, had Birmingham had the sense to follow Gladstone instead of Chamberlain.' Taylor Cadbury also comments on the 'slanderous and malicious' methods employed by the Labour Party's canvassers and speakers.

Taylor Cadbury remarks on the high ideals of the Liberal Party, the educational platform of their campaign and their work to improve conditions in industry and for those living in poor housing. She points out the differences between the policies of the Labour Party and the Liberal Party, remarking that whereas Labour appealed to self-interest, the Liberal Party appealed for 'service' and 'social reform for all', contrasting the 'Material Gospel' of the Labour Party with the 'Spiritual Gospel' of the Liberals. Taylor Cadbury concludes her address by calling for the establishment of a 'Progressive Liberal Association'.
