LevelItem
Date24 June 1943
DescriptionEmmeline Pethick-Lawrence (1867-1954) was a prominent suffragette who served as Treasurer of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (1915-1922) and President of the Women's Freedom League (1926-1935). Pethick-Lawrence worked with Agatha Harrison to produce the 'Indian Deadlock British Women's Appeal' statement which was issued to politicians and the press on 3rd June 1943. In this letter which was sent to the seventy one women who supported the appeal. Pethick-Lawrence remarks particularly on the response to the appearance of the statement in the 'Manchester Guardian' and includes extracts of the replies she had received from the Prime Minister's Secretary and Mr. L. S. Amery, the Secretary of State for India. Despite Amery's hostile response to the statement's suggestion regarding imprisoned members of the Indian Congress Party, Pethick-Lawrence encourages further effort suggesting that women were responsible for 'putting our point of view before people in key positions, as well as before the general public.'

Pethick-Lawrence enclosed a copy of the statement and a copy of editorial content relating to the statement printed in the 'Manchester Guardian' with her letter.
