| Description | Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's close friend and travelling companion Eiluned Lewis kept this diary of her experiences in India which provides daily accounts of the party's activities from their arrival on Sunday 26th January 1936 to their departure on Saturday 22nd February. It is possible that this diary was kept on behalf of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury and that Taylor Cadbury herself contributed to the diary in order to keep a record of her visit to India.
As well as notes about daily activities, Lewis also recorded her impressions of the places which the party visited in India, such as Agra and Delhi, describing Indian history and geography and remarking on landmarks such as the Taj Mahal. A list of names of women who attended the World Congress of the International Council of Women is featured on the last pages of the diary.
Although many of the pages within Lewis's diary are blank, a series of loose sheets attached together within the volume provides a daily journal of events such as visits, attendance at meetings and social gatherings, as well as travel arrangements. The diary provides a detailed insight into Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's activities and appears to be cross-referenced in places to the newscuttings which also feature amongst papers relating to Taylor Cadbury's visit. |
