LevelItem
Date01 January 1921 - 31 December 1925
DescriptionThis Walker's 'Year by Year' book covers the years 1921-1925 featuring a page for each day of the year with room for entries over a period of five years for each date. The diary is cloth-covered featuring an embroidered floral design which incorporates Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's initials 'EMC' (Elizabeth Mary Cadbury). Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury has added the day of the week to the date for entries throughout this diary which vary in length and detail.

The diary includes many loose items enclosed between its pages. These include a black and white postcard illustrated with a photograph of 'Les Lacets Du Col De Braus' which has been inserted between pages dated 6th March and 7th March. Another small photograph showing a young child standing outdoors is enclosed loose between pages dated 3rd April and 4th April. A piece of paper marked with the words 'Visit to Canada' is enclosed between pages dated 27th April and 28th April as well as a piece of paper marked with the words '1925 Stockholm Universal Christian Conference on Life & Work Aug: 19 to 31' enclosed between pages dated 19th August and 20th August. A further marker featuring the words 'Murren 1924' is enclosed in the diary between pages dated 28th October and 29th October. The diary also contains a blank postcard enclosed between pages dated 24th October and 25th October featuring an extract from Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's diary entry dated 24th October 1922, the date on which her husband George Cadbury died. The postcard reads 'George Cadbury passed on on October 24th 1922' and includes notes remarking that he had passed away just as the bell sounded for workers at Bournville to go home. Other markers including a small piece of white blotting paper and torn extracts of newspaper are also enclosed throughout the diary. Towards the end of the diary between pages dated 19th and 20th December there is a small marker featuring details about Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's trip to Washington and a typed copy of a letter dated 21st January 1925 written by her 'Private Secretary'. The letter relates to an invitation which Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury had received to visit a school, stating that Mrs. Cadbury was away in Italy.

Additional sheets of paper are enclosed between the pages marked 'Memoranda' at the back of the diary. The first of these features typed copies of extracts taken from Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's diary entries written between 28th August 1902 and 16th December 1902 relating to the development of Woodbrooke. A number of other photographs and a printed copy of a letter dated November 1922 thanking people for their sympathy following the death of George Cadbury are also included. This letter remarks that George Cadbury's 'practical devotion to the needs of the world was inspired by a corresponding devotion to his interpretation of the will of God.' The photographs show George Cadbury with a young child, possibly one of the Cadburys' children or grandchildren. Other photographs show young children, again most probaby children or grandchildren in the Cadbury family, playing with a dog and riding a horse. A small newspaper extract relating to contemporary social and political debate in America and a letter dated 23rd December 1924 to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury from her sister-in-law Huldah Taylor, the wife of her brother Claude, are also enclosed at the back of the diary. Huldah Taylor's letter expresses her love and appreciation of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury.
