| Title | Elizabeth Taylor's journal relating to her tour of Switzerland |
| Level | Item |
| Date | August 1883 - September 1883 |
| Description | In 1883 Elizabeth Taylor's aunt and uncle Caroline and George Barrow arranged for her to accompany them on a tour of Switzerland with a party of young people. Elizabeth Taylor's journal includes an account of her travels in both prose and verse. The diary also contains pencil, ink and watercolour drawings of the places and people she encountered on her travels, some of which are enclosed in the journal on loose cards. Taylor's journal begins with an account of her journey to Switzerland on the Continental Express to Dover where the party travelled by sea to France and then again by train to Switzerland. The journal includes detailed descriptions of the mountainous landscape and the party's activities once in Switzerland. Elizabeth Taylor provides accounts of visits to churches and excursions by train and boat to explore the country and sketch the scenery. She also describes the glaciers she saw and the railway journeys the party went on to see the summits of mountains. Illustrated throughout with many coloured drawings and sketches, Elizabeth Taylor's journal ends with an account of the party's journey home.
It is interesting that in her personal diary for 1883 Elizabeth Taylor suggests that a member of the Cadbury family was included in the party of people who travelled with the Barrows to Switzerland. |
