TitleElizabeth and George Cadbury's holiday journal written whilst on a tour of Scotland
LevelItem
Date01 August 1889 - 27 August 1889
DescriptionThis journal relates to Elizabeth and George Cadbury's family holiday in Scotland in August 1889. The journal includes photographs of Scottish scenery and occasional sketches. A piece of pressed white heather is enclosed on page thirty five of the journal.

George and Elizabeth Cadbury kept daily entries of the weather, their travelling experiences and the family's activities on this holiday, beginning their journal in the Western Highlands on Thursday 1st August 1889. The Cadburys were accompanied on their trip by George Cadbury's five children from his first marriage Edward, George Junior, Henry, Isabel and Eleanor, and their new baby Laurence who was born in 1889. The family toured around Scotland for a month, visiting places including Oban before returning to their home, Woodbrooke in Selly Oak, on Thursday 29th August 1889. The last entry in the journal is dated Tuesday 27th August. Four of the family's maids and nurses accompanied the family on their tour.

Whilst on holiday the family hired a boat and sailed around the highlands visiting lochs and castles and bathing on the shores of the coast. They also cycled and explored the landscape, taking walks and picnics in the mountains around a campfire. The journal reveals that George Cadbury's eldest son Edward supplied food for the family by fishing from their boat. However, a box of fruit and vegetables was also sent to the family from home as their supplies were limited whilst travelling around remote areas.

It is interesting to note that this volume is entitled 'G. Cadbury's Family Journal'. This suggests that these early holiday journals may be forerunners to the weekly family journal letters which Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury distributed amongst members of her family detailing their activities and recording important family events.
