| Description | This journal, kept by George and Elizabeth Cadbury, records details of the family's holidays in Tarbet in Scotland in 1891 and 1892. A loose railway map and annotated photographs of both the scenery and members of the family are enclosed in the journal. Different members of the Cadbury family, including the older children, appear to have contributed a majority of the entries to the journal. The children took responsibility for compiling the journal describing the family's activities as George and Elizabeth Cadbury were 'so tired of writing' owing to the large number of letters they were required to answer.
The first entry in the journal records that on approaching Tarbet by boat the Cadbury family had 'felt our wildest hopes would be realised' by the beauty of the scenery. The family rented a house named 'Heathfield' in Tarbet and travelled around the country, sometimes in separate parties, exploring the landscape, towns and coast. The family also stayed in 'The Grand Hotel' in Oban. The entry for Saturday 18th July 1891 records a trip to a bathing cove and refers to Glasgow Fair which was being held that weekend. The entry also refers to celebrations held to commemorate the eleventh birthday of Elizabeth and George's son George Norman (Norman), on Sunday 19th July, which included a 'grand cake'.
Many of the pages in this journal feature annotations to the photographs taped into the journal, describing the scenes and the 'glorious' sunsets which the Cadbury family witnessed whilst travelling around Scotland.
A majority of the journal is blank, although some loose photographs are enclosed between a number of the pages towards the back of the volume. |
