| Description | This journal contains detailed entries relating to George and Elizabeth Cadbury's holiday in Switzerland during 1893. Although the journal dates from August 1893, correspondence suggests that they were in Switzerland by June of this year.
After arriving in Boulogne, the Cadbury's travelled on to Switzerland, leaving their four children Laurence, George Norman, Elsie Dorothea and Egbert in Boulogne with their aunt, George Cadbury's sister Maria Fairfax. The journal includes daily entries describing the couple's activities in Switzerland which included bathing, walking, exploring the lakes and mountains and 'glacier expeditions'. The couple also participated in religious services where they met other English people.
A majority of the journal is blank after page fifty-two. However, the final page of the journal numbered '100' features an itinerary of Elizabeth and George Cadbury's trip from Thursday August 31st when they travelled from Boulogne to Lausanne via Paris, to their return journey and arrival at Boulogne on Saturday 30th September 1893. Over the course of a month the couple travelled to numerous places in France, Switzerland and Italy, including Lac Champese, the Alps, Bellagio, Milan and Geneva.
Please note that the pages of this journal are particularly thin and the writing is considerably faded in places, making a number of the entries difficult to read. |
