TitleLetter from Mary Jane Taylor to Elizabeth Taylor
LevelItem
Date21 August 1883
DescriptionIn this letter Mary Taylor remarks on her daughter's travels in Switzerland, writing that the family would prefer to receive letters from Elizabeth rather than wait to read her holiday journal on her return. Mary Taylor comments 'in the end the letters are a journal often'. She also remarks on the descriptions of Swiss scenery which Elizabeth had included in her letters. Mary Taylor provides an account of recent family visits and comments on the health of Elizabeth's father. She writes that John Taylor had been 'very tired lately', adding that 'London seems more bustling & tiring every week'.

Mary Taylor describes visiting 'the Tinworth exhibition', an exhibition at the Royal Academy by the sculptor George Tinworth (1843-1913), providing a detailed account of the exhibits, commenting that Tinworth's work reflected the 'spirits' of his mother's Bible teaching. Mary Taylor also suggests that John Taylor was attempting to encourage scholars he taught at 'the Arch' to attend the exhibition, adding that Mr. Doulton had arranged 'evening visits from working people'.

Mary Taylor writes about taking Elizabeth's brothers and sisters to the dentist and remarks on Elizabeth's cousins Theodore and Una. She concludes her letter with comments about the welfare of Elizabeth's siblings, noting that she had been to Liberty's with Janet and bought a 'tea cosy basket'.
