TitleLetter from Elizabeth Taylor to Mary Jane Taylor
LevelItem
Date02 September 1883
DescriptionElizabeth Taylor begins this letter by referring to correspondence from her family, noting how weary her party were after their strenuous activities each day. She describes climbing in the Bel Alps and remarks on the health benefits of the fresh mountain air, describing her adventures climbing the Sparren-Horn. Taylor comments on a dangerous walk down steep mountains with sharp, uneven stones which had taken her party to the town of Brieg in the Rhone Valley. She writes that she had 'wandered into the shops' in Brieg where women 'in pretty costumes' were gathered around a well in the centre of the town 'gossiping'. The letter also includes a description of an ancient castle in the Rhone Valley. Elizabeth writes about going to Mass on Sunday, describing the hundreds of people coming into the town in traditional costume. She also remarks on her enjoyment glissading in the snow, adding that the party had been to pick edelweiss flowers. She concludes her letter with references to her family.
