| Date | 02 March 1917 |
| Description | Writing from Cairo where he was engaged in work with the Young Men's Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.), Harris describes his arrangements for returning to Woodbrooke. He writes that he was planning to meet his friend J. H. Moulton at Port Said to return to England.
Harris describes his 'interesting time' in Cairo, where he had been 'visiting various towns & villages' searching for 'papyri'. Harris remarks 'the dealers here had some, which they offered at fabulous prices', writing that he had gone on 'the trail' to find his own. Harris describes his findings commenting 'the results were distinctly encouraging', adding that he had been arrested in one place for being 'an unlawful digger'. Harris continues writing that it was too early to say 'whether anything of importance has come into our net'. He adds 'I suppose it is no use to hoard them for Woodbrooke; they will have to go to Rylands Library, in all probability'. Wood and Agnew write that a selection of the papyri found by Harris was edited by J. Enoch Powell and published as 'The Rendel Harris Papyri' in 1936. |
