The correspondence forms a journal of the couple's experiences, individual letters containing a variety of dated entries written jointly by Elizabeth and George Cadbury.

The letters describe the Cadburys travels which began with a visit to Florence before staying in Rome and Naples. The couple then travelled to Cairo via Port Said and Ismailia before returning back to France via Alexandria. The letters provide a vivid insight into overseas travel during the late nineteenth century and feature fascinating accounts of the places visited by Elizabeth and George Cadbury, reflecting contemporary attitudes to different races, cultures and religions during this period.
