| Description | The Bournville Works Magazine first appeared in 1902. Published by Cadbury Brothers, the magazine reported events relating to the Cadbury business, the Cadbury family and life in Bournville. This special edition of the monthly magazine was published to commemorate the life of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury following her death on 4th December 1951.
The magazine features an introductory biography of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury followed by a section about her ancestry and family relations and a page of family memories.
Much of the magazine concerns Taylor Cadbury's role in the development of Bournville and her association with the Cadbury factory. Remarking that her 'chief interest' was 'in the Estate and its residents' the magazine states:
'The part played by Dame Elizabeth in the encouragement of social and educational activities at the factory - particularly for women and girls - was far greater than many people of more recent generations realise.'
Following a detailed illustrated overview of Taylor Cadbury's involvement in Bournville, the magazine features appreciations contributed by the Bournville Village Trustees and an account of Taylor Cadbury's 'public life' in Birmingham and further afield. A section is also dedicated to Taylor Cadbury's work supporting Christian worship in Bournville through her close association with the Bournville Meeting.
An account of Taylor Cadbury's memorial service including a copy of Mr. Norman Birkett's tribute to her is also featured alongside articles by Herbert George Wood and Sir Barry Jackson. A page of tributes extracted from obituary notices published in the local and national press is printed at the end of the magazine. |
