DescriptionFollowing his death 26th May 1948, aged 77, Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury wrote this obituary notice for her friend and colleague Sir George Newman entitled 'a Great Public Servant' which was printed in 'The Times'. In her obituary Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury provides a long account of Newman's education and public career, noting that he would be remembered as 'one of the chief architects of the modern system of public health administration'. The obituary also includes details of Newman's published works, Elizabeth commenting on his 'historical sense' and the 'breadth of outlook' which was evident in his annual reports as Chief Medical Officer. In addition, the obituary also includes details about Newman's Quaker faith, Taylor Cadbury writing that he was amongst 'the younger Quakers who, at the turn of the century, brought a stream of new life and a broader outlook into the society'. Details of Newman's involvement with the 'Friends' Quarterly Examiner' also feature, as well as references to his work supporting the adult school movement and the Friends' Ambulance Unit.
