TitleElizabeth Taylor, the Portfolio Society and Edward Reynolds Pease
LevelSub Series
Date1877 - 1883
DescriptionThis section contains papers relating to Elizabeth Taylor's involvement with the Quaker literary and debating group, the Portfolio Society. Scott writes that meetings of the Society were often held at the home of the surgeon Jonathan Hutchinson, the founder of Haslemere. Elizabeth Taylor was a close friend of Hutchinson's daughter Elsie. The section includes an invitation sent to Elizabeth Taylor by the Portfolio Society as well as a copy of an essay written by Edward Reynolds Pease entitled 'Personal Duty'. These documents feature alongside a handwritten copy of a paper written by Elizabeth Taylor entitled 'Can Poverty be Relieved without Alms Giving?' which she wrote in 1883 in response to Pease's essay. Scott suggests that Elizabeth Taylor's essay instigated her correspondence and friendship with Edward Reynolds Pease. Scott remarks that Elizabeth Taylor was 'a leader amongst the group of young Friends in London' associated with the Portfolio Society.
