| AdminHistory | During the late nineteenth century Elizabeth Taylor participated in philanthropic work at 'The Sailor's Rest' Club' in Ratcliffe Highway where she supported the welfare of the many international sailors who stayed at the Club. Through this work Elizabeth Taylor became involved with a home for Scandinavian sailors run by a Swedish woman named Agnes Hedenstrom. Supported by a Swedish businessman Axel Welin, Hedenstrom founded a home for Scandinavian sailors, providing hostel accommodation for sailors and their families who arrived at the London docks unable to speak English and with no alternative but to seek refuge in public houses. Elizabeth Taylor worked alongside Agnes Hedenstrom, taking responsibility for the home and its inmates. A new home was opened in 1888 by Prince Oscar of Sweden & Norway. |
