TitleLetter from Elizabeth Taylor to Mary Jane Taylor
LevelItem
Date[n.d. 11 March 1885]
DescriptionAlthough this letter is undated, its contents suggest that it was written the day after the postcard which Elizabeth Taylor sent home on 10th March following her arrival at the medical mission in Belleville.

Elizabeth Taylor remarks on her injured foot and provides an account of her activities since arriving in Paris, noting the 'splendid view' from her room. She writes that she had not been allowed to go to the night school as it was her first evening in Paris, so she had remained at the mission where she had sung and played to the other volunteers. Elizabeth remarks that she was to dispense and make medicines, commenting that she hoped she would not poison anyone. She adds that she had been asked to take a class of girls at the night school, writing that she would have preferred boys. Elizabeth also provides an account of the many activities undertaken by volunteers at the mission.

Writing that the mission reminded her of being back at school, Elizabeth remarks that Madamoiselle de Broen had commented that she was pleased that one of John Taylor's daughters had joined the mission, reflecting her father's prominent role in public philanthropic work. Comments made by Elizabeth Taylor later in her letter suggest that John Taylor had been involved in founding the mission in Belleville. She also remarks on the work of the Depot which was associated with the mission.
