| Description | These letters were sent to Elizabeth Taylor by her mother Mary Jane Taylor whilst Elizabeth was engaged in voluntary work in Paris. The section also features a letter sent to Elizabeth by her father John Taylor who visited her whilst she was staying in Belleville.
Mary Taylor's letters provide an insight into Taylor family life during 1885, including detailed accounts of family news, health and social activities. A number of Mary Taylor's letters refer to the family's domestic situation, including incidents involving their drunken neighbour Mr. Smith. Her letters to Elizabeth also provide an insight into John Taylor's business difficulties, describing the family's despair and efforts by Elizabeth's father to recover his stockbrokering firm. John Taylor also refers to his difficult financial situation in his own letter to Elizabeth. |
