TitleLetter from Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury to 'The Friend'
LevelItem
Date23 May 1948
DescriptionFollowing the debate concerning membership of the Society of Friends in the World Council of Churches during the late 1930s and early 1940s, in 1948 Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury wrote to 'The Friend' responding to a contribution which had appeared in the journal during May 1948 about 'the lack of official unity between ourselves and the Christian Churches of the World.'

Taylor Cadbury remarks on her regret that the Society of Friends had not joined the Federation of Free Churches which she suggests was 'religious snobbery'. She describes the failure of the Society to join the World Council of Churches as a 'terrible error'. Taylor Cadbury also comments on 'the great help and inspiration' she had gained through 'communion with men and women of varying forms of thought and worship'.

Taylor Cadbury describes her experiences as President of the National Free Church Council in 1925 before concluding her letter by appealing for greater co-operation and collaboration between the Religious Society of Friends and other Christian communities.
